people do not want to leave

Iceland, an isolated island in the extreme north of Europe, seems to have a disruptive quality most bigger countries don’t have. The last time it made the headlines was when a volcano exploded, bringing European air traffic to a halt for six weeks. Before that, Icelandic banks imploded, causing European savers to lose billions.

But Iceland also offers us some of the most spectacular scenery to be found on the planet, a welcoming people and cuisine famous for its rotted shark meat.

It is a great place that, despite its extremes, people do not want to leave: it has some of the lowest emigration statistics in the world.
